One of the most common thoughts of people thinking about starting a business with which they can work at home is having all kinds of free time and being able to work when they feel like working. The reality is, that operating a business at home is more than a full time job and in most cases their workday will be filled with distractions.
When working a job outside the home most people do not see the distractions around the house. They may have gone to bed early and left the dishes in the sink or the dishwasher and forgot about that load of clothes they maybe should have done the night before. When they get up the next morning those chores are still there, but they have to get ready for work and when they arrive homes that night, the chores are still there. When working at an outside job the phone is not heard ringing and friends and family will not drop in unexpectedly because they know you are working.
All of this seems to change when a person decides to move their job into their home and suddenly that eight hours of work will take 12 or more to be accomplished. The dishes will seem to be calling your name and the dirty laundry will be calling out from another room in the house. Suddenly, the telephone's ringing will never seem to stop and if, by glancing at the caller ID they decide not to answer the phone, the unanswered caller, knowing they home may stop by just to make sure they are OK.
Such are a few of the distractions that take time away from the person working at home. There are many others, often self-inflicted that prevent them getting their work done on time. Working outside the home and for someone else, there are certain expectations about the amount of work that will be produced during the day, but for some reason working at home makes deadlines seem to be innocuous. There will be no one around reminding them the work needs to get done, often causing them to leave it until the last minute.
Some people use the excuse that they work better under pressure, but most times when under pressure they do not do their best work. Some of the other distractions that get in their way may the television and a program they really wanted to watch. Turning on the TV in the middle of the day can provide tremendous distractions, which causes a loss of focus on the task at hand, allowing them to get further behind.
It takes a certain mind-set to be able to operate a successful home business while dealing with the daily distractions. Persons who do not have the self-discipline to focus on the task at hand, may be better off working outside the home for someone else who can help keep their mind on the job. The main thing to remember when working at your own home business is that if you don't do it, no one else will and soon there be no business.
